Ever wondered how to make your Ubuntu desktop more spiffy? It’s easy when you enable the desktop effects through Compiz Fusion, and I made a quick tutorial will to show you how. If you don’t know, Compiz “aims to provide an easy and fun-to-use windowed environment, allowing use of the graphics hardware to render each individual window and the entire screen, to provide some impressive effects, speed and usefulness.” – Compiz Website Here’s how you get started: First we will enable Compiz by going to System—–Preferences——Appearance—-Visual Effects and choosing the “Extra” radio button. Then we will open a terminal and install ccsm.. twurl.nl for the rest of the text version of the video, including the commands. Thanks for all your input and support! Beryl merged with Compiz-Fusion, for those who have asked. EDIT: Known bug and FIX with Computer: Intel 2.5Ghz, nvidia geforce 8400 Ubuntu 9.04 x64 Compiz 0.8.2 For the cube, the settings sometimes are not changed in the compiz file and must be done manually: Run gconf-editor (alt+f2) Change: /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/hsize: 4 and /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/number_of_desktops: 1 Thanks a lot for the tip, blindguardian72! =D

Is it possible to do it on Ubuntu 9. 10 running on a VMWare?
I tried changing my Visual Effects from “None” to “Extra” since I have a really good machine, But it wont let me. I get seaching for drivers and then nothing happens.
Can you show me how to do it? I’m new to Linux and I am starting to like it. I just need some time to adapt.

But ofcourse there are some programs in some domains of activity that exist only in windows and their Linux equivalents just won’t do the trick. But that’s only because most important programs are primally developed for Windows, ’cause there’s where big money come from, Linux being mostly free. So the difference it’s actually something about money and not because windows it’s better than Linux. Any complex open source program it’s better than a licensed one just because it’s open source.

In linux you can run a lot of windows games using Wine a program with cross platform capabilities. Not to mention there are a lot of 3d native linux games either, but they’re mostly online orientated. For example my favorite and the only game I play anymore, is Danger from the deep, one of the few submarine sims which is free and it’s mainly developed for linux. As online 3d games:True combat elite, Tremulous, Nexuiz, Vendetta etc.

actually in Linux you can do pretty much everything that you can do in Windows. The difference is that Linux might imply writing some code lines, but only in some particular cases, the Linux GUI evolved a lot in the last 10 years, and actually if you have some imagination you can make it look even better than Windows. Nixie’s tutorials always show how it’s done using code lines, but almost everything she did through code lines could be done from Ubuntu’s GUI, using synaptic and proper sources.

i dont really wanna enter the debate about windows v linux seeing as dev’s did that already and windows won.
however linux is good for pretty much nothing i use my computer for i. e gaming. . . . soon as they make a functional OS that is supported by anyone at all ill switch to that, until then windows all the way

I think Ubuntu should get a better settings manager so you can make your own “Normal” and “Extra” profiles. You should also teach people how to use . bash_aliases, in fact Ubuntu should have a wizard with tool-tips etc so users can shorten the most commonly used Terminal commands themselves with the click of a button.

Why is it that all the Linux fanboys are obsessed with turning a cube on their screen around a million times?
Why are there NO VIDEOS on Linux applications and actual work you can accomplish on Linux?
It’s all just visual masturbation.
